Lithium Carbonate Alternatives for Cement Accelerators

The construction industry has long relied on lithium carbonate for its role in rapid setting products, a critical factor in the production of materials such as tile adhesive, grout, and self-levelling compounds. However, recent spikes in lithium prices have created a need for more sustainable, cost-effective alternatives.

In response to this challenge, AptiCem, a division of Devine Chemicals, launched the AptiLith range in 2022. These innovative products are not merely substitutes for lithium carbonate but are designed to deliver enhanced performance across a wide array of construction applications.

The Lithium Challenge and AptiCem’s Response

Lithium carbonate has been favoured in construction due to its ability to accelerate the hydration process in fast-set cements. However, its inefficiency with Portland cement and the market’s instability, driven by fluctuating lithium prices, have posed significant challenges.

Recognising the need for a more reliable and economically viable solution, AptiCem developed the AptiLith range. These alternatives are formulated using a blend of organometallic and metal salts that work synergistically to accelerate the hydration process across both fast-set and Portland cements, making them more efficient and versatile.

The AptiLith Range: Tailored Solutions for Diverse Needs

The AptiLith range offers a suite of products designed to cater to the specific requirements of different construction applications:

  • AptiLith P: This product offers a cost-effective alternative to lithium carbonate. It delivers comparable performance while helping to reduce costs.
  • AptiLith: A versatile option suitable for a wide range of applications, including CTA and SLU/SLC systems. AptiLith maintains consistent flow and set times, making it a reliable choice for general use.
  • AptiLith Ultra: Developed for high-spec applications, particularly in low-temperature environments, AptiLith Ultra contains higher levels of lithium carbonate and other reactive additives. It outperforms traditional lithium carbonate in demanding cementitious systems, making it ideal for situations where higher levels of acceleration are required.
  • AptiLith Boost: A novel, 100% lithium-free option, AptiLith Boost is designed to be used in conjunction with lithium carbonate, allowing users to significantly reduce the lithium content in their formulations. In some cases, AptiLith Boost can replace up to 80% of the lithium carbonate traditionally used, offering a highly effective and economical solution.

Superior Performance Across Cementitious Applications

The AptiLith products are engineered to accelerate the hydration of all hydraulic binders present in cementitious systems. This results in faster setting times and improved early-age strength, making them highly effective in a range of binding systems.

Unlike traditional lithium carbonate, which is only reactive with fast-set cements, AptiLith solutions are comprehensive in their approach, enhancing the overall efficiency of cementitious materials.

One of the key advantages of the AptiLith range is its ability to maintain high performance across a variety of conditions. For example, AptiLith Ultra is particularly effective in low-temperature applications, where other accelerators may struggle to perform. Additionally, the AptiLith Boost product stands out for its ability to function as a lithium-free accelerator, providing an alternative to high-alkali salt-based accelerators that typically only react with specific cement phases.

Looking Forward: The Future of Cement Accelerators

The introduction of AptiLith alternatives marks a significant shift in the construction materials industry. As the demand for sustainable, economically viable materials continues to grow, AptiCem’s innovative products are well-positioned to lead the way. These alternatives not only address the immediate challenges posed by fluctuating lithium prices but also offer long-term benefits in terms of performance and cost efficiency.

By integrating these advanced products into their projects, construction professionals can mitigate the risks associated with lithium pricing, ensure the continued efficiency and durability of their materials, and contribute to a more sustainable future for the industry.
